End of the Semester Message Wall

Image
A fellow teacher and I once had this conversation over breakfast about how elementary students interact with us. Both and I agree that children's interaction and comments are usually unfiltered--- what they say is purely an overflow of their hearts.      These are just few and selected comments from my students at the end our semester with sir Basug in UPIS. Motivating words coming from very young children whose future relies on how they are nurtured and guided.      Having a sip of coffee, I am reading these entries with a smile. These are just the few things that keep me going. #padayon

Final Moments: Reflective Essay and Conclussion

Image
I can still remember the first virtual “meet and greet” with our coordinating teachers, headed by the assistant principal of UPIS. While we were waiting for the others to join the zoom meeting, she is playing “At the Beginning” where a portion of lyrics has been carved in my mind, which goes: “ Life is a road, now and forever, wonderful journey” Indeed, the road we are about to take as a Student Teacher is indeed just a start of a journey, especially that we are the initial batch that goes with the online class setting.             Together with most of my classmates, I have my shared anxiety on how we will deal with this kind of scenario wherein all of us are in a same boat, facilitators and students alike, are still gasping for familiarity about distant learning as it’s the only way we can move on with the Academic Year 2020-2021.   ...

Journal Week 10

Unload      It's the feast of Immaculate Conception and we don't have class this week. Since I am done with my demo class at this time I simply unload my all my anxieties, exhaustion and stress away. ***      The past two weeks accumulated so much work load that I felt I really need a break. Went mountain trekking with my friends and just simply be with nature.      It's one of those organized trek where there is a a guide from the locals and we went from trekking the fields, climbed two mountains, went spelunking and river crossing. One of my best moments I had, when I sort of separate myself from the group and just lay down by the river. Listen to the water flow and just simply zoom out. It's a complete surrender and soaked into divine bliss.      Nature definitely is the ultimate re-charger and I felt this is a good year ender and a great way to gear myself for the upcoming year.

Rearrange  All these years of learning "how to teach" is finally being put into practice. I am collecting all the knowledge and best practices that was taught by my mentors from  College of Education. Combined with my Art History and Art Making in College of Fine Arts, I am in the midst of rearranging all these inputs and present them in one final presentation. Just like paper cut outs and paste them into a collage.  This time, I am putting these concepts of teaching into action. ***      Finally, I am done with my demo classes and here are the feedback or "feed forward" that was shared to me of which I will definitely apply on my future teaching sessions.   Only if the time permits, try to minimize time to play for music and continue with the discussion since we have limited time (should only have been 40 mins, and my first class was extended to an hour?!) Make use of chat box to provide instructions so in case I might get disconnected, there's...

"Every single line means something."      -Jean-Michel Basquiat      Had my first Art Class practicum today about lines and visual perception!!!      I never felt so ecstatic and relieved after sleepless nights of preparing my lesson plans, visual presentation, pre recorded discussion and demo teaching.      I also had the chance to peer observe Mita's class for her Math subject and was very impressed how she make a very challenging subject to be fun and entertaining. In fact, my next visual presentation is somehow inspired by her and even my bitmoji above!      And it is true that you learn  more when you teach, since you really have to learn what you are about to teach and also you will learn from your students. One time, I had a hard time figuring out a certain setting about google class meet, and one of my students were able to teach me. It was a very humbling experience and it just shows that learning d...

Perspective It's about how you see it, you may view it from a man's view, worm's view or bird's view. In other scenario, you may look at the glass either half full or half empty. It's just a matter of perspective. ***      Today, I finally met Sir Basug's class. Sir Arman Basug is my coordinating teacher and I felt so lucky and privileged to be handled by him since he is very supportive and hands-on to my practicum here in UPIS. I am very much impressed how Sir Basug maximized the student's potential to learn as he sent out his lectures in advance so during the class proper, he will add a thorough review and class demo as Art Lessons are definitely can be maximized through practice.      Even me, I found myself well engaged with his class as I am also doing this week's activity: Lines and perspective. I also did my sketches and get reminded that this activity is fundamental, specially for the upcoming years these students will undergo with their curr...

Home  After observing a class and how teacher Bam and his students interact, and how life lessons can be integrated into the main lesson itself, it reminds me of having dinner with my family and how my parents gave advice to my siblings while eating. It is very fascinating and heartwarming at the same time. It really reminds me of home.  ***      It's also about going back to my roots, which is teaching. I really feel like this is what I ought to do after having series of corporate jobs. I remembered being an art workshop facilitator in the past and it gave me so much joy. But due to financial constraint (as I have to support my siblings), I have to find a corporate job that pays more. But all these time, t eaching is by far the one really closest to my heart even though my current job is quite easy but its routinary, as compared to teaching, it's very spontaneous and in a way give you that sense of purpose and fulfillment.     ...

Culture Shock I remembered whe n I had my first international trip to Hong Kong. I was completely blown away with the unfamiliar culture, it feels like in a Sofia Coppola's film: "Lost in Translation", wherein I have to orient myself with the art of effective communication: expressing or opening oneself to others. Now, I also have to learn the culture of remote teaching ethics, online instruction and  assessment. ***      It is indeed an experimental era as we are all in the infancy stage of unit wide online learning. I am quite impressed how even the specialists on this field and professors in the esteemed universities in the U.S. took this as a humbling experience as even themselves have to learn from their colleagues and may take heed from other international counterparts to have an ongoing and collaborative sharing of best practices.       I guess to most challenging task for me is the load that we, future teachers are taking. Since the a...

On Remote Online Instruction and Assessment

Reading through the pdf/article I just cannot contain the immensity of the tasks that we are about to embark and at the same time it gave me comfort that these instructors based in Washington DC had gone through it and they able to make it. Although there were uncertainties, but they have to do action at least not to get stuck as what have mentioned on the first part of this chronicle:  “We have a responsibility to our community and to the community at large,” per the university’s president (in Washington State), Ana Mari Cauce.      Among the 10 Essential Principles and Practices the one that is close to my heart are:  • to be yourself and  • to commit to continuous improvement      As these might be essential but these are significant learnings for me, since the other 8 has been experienced since day one (with this Educ 180/181 course), as a "student" so I am trying to put myself "as a teacher" this time and having...

On Remote Teaching Ethics

Internet etiquette aka "netiquette" must be established in an online class. Specially during these times that we are gearing towards virtual communication. As discussed in the video, one of the key etiquette is to make sure to have a good impression specially to your class as being a teacher is a profession and it calls for expertise and mastery not just with the subject but also how you conduct yourself with your subject. So, it is important to use professional language and avoid slang and abbreviations. Then we must make sure to check grammar and spelling. It's also discussed the basic email guidelines by not using smileys or emoticons sparingly and to use san serif, why? Because Serif (meaning, a slight projection finishing off a stroke of a letter in certain typefaces.) Should be use when it is printed on papers e.g. newspaper or handouts. But for digital page such as website and email, it is much readable if it doesn't have the Serif, hence san Serif.  ...
