While information is right at the very tip of our fingers, with the advent of technology and vast networking, we are still bounded by responsible data curation and data privacy.

1.) Data Curation

Speaking from the Fine Arts point of view,  "Curation" in the world of art, can either make or break an artist.

That's why we cannot put so much emphasis to the works and description during an art exhibit---which is very similar to this topic, the appropriate and well "guided" learnings of our future students depend on the information that we gathered and provided.

Data Curation, I used to think that whatever available information can be provided as long as it's related to the topic asked or being given. Then, I realized that these would lead to "pitfalls" as  we have the responsibility to provide accurate and valid information specially to a target audience, who can benefit from the information that was carefully gathered and organized.

I hope by doing best practices in content curation one could avoid the major pitfalls such as being a hoarder, scrooge, tabloid and robot curation--- these best practices are done by effective content gathering which is fully usable and accessible way. A well researched and validated curation can minimize the instances of misleading the students to false information. Generally, I feel responsible for being aware and critical in terms of the information that I disseminate as this could affect the learning of my future students and also make sure that the wide range of "quality" information can be easily accessed and available, not to burden my target audience.

The reason/s for this, let's say for example, as teachers: are looked upon by the students and teachers have the credibility and whatever we said or teach were automatically embraced by our students.

Sharing information added with depth and validity is "responsible data curation" and I guess this lesson is really all about, it is indeed a  great responsibility for us to pass on the "sifted" knowledge to the new generation.

It made me remember of a lesson I had with anthropology, that culture and language was actually passed on with caution,  for example, as simple as adding "poison" to a plant named "poison ivy" was sharing a knowledge with caution as this indicates that  fatality has been experienced and this would avoid any further casualties.

2.) Data Privacy

Before I always consider the 2 way verification in our email account as a nuisance but now it made me realize that it's actually an extra step to secure our information. I can only hope that we are putting much importance on this rather than complain as this kind of matters are usually taken for granted until it's too late, as all information that we posts has limitation and also subject for data privacy breach.

As Security breach had happened in the past and now we are heightening security in all costs. Preventive measures are now in place as it only shows that we do learn from our mistakes and hopefully University and Nation wide have come up with a resolution that would benefit more than the damages that we might have incurred. We all understand the precautions and might need more comprehensive awareness on this as the ultimate goal of the  Data Privacy Act of 2012 is:

“to protect the fundamental human right of privacy, of communication while ensuring free flow of information to promote innovation and growth.”
